Developmental Reading Education in the United States: One Decade Later
By Michaeline E. Laine, Chester H. Laine, and Terry L. Bullock, University of Cincinnati

Abstract

In the spring of 1990, Bullock, Madden and Mallery (1990) published "Developmental Education in American Universities: Past, Present and Future," in Research and Teaching in Developmental Education. Approximately a decade later, as we enter the new millennium, a follow-up survey of US developmental reading programs has been replicated. The follow-up survey reported here was undertaken to determine what changes, if any, occurred during the past decade. In this article, we analyze data from the follow-up survey, compare these data with the previous findings, and draw implications for the future of college developmental reading. Although many of the questions in the follow-up survey remain the same, several were altered and a few new ones were added. The original and new survey instruments can be found in Appendices A and B.
