A Report on Student Achievement in a Pilot Program for Developmental Students
By Linda Best and Terry Y. Fung, Kean University

Abstract

The authors report on the first phase of a two-year pilot study of a university level mathematics requirement that accounts for the needs of developmental students. Seven sections of a new course, Math 1000 Algebra for College Students, were offered in 00-01 and delivered in two ways: in the standard three-credit format for students who placed in university-level mathematics and in an extended format for students who placed in the upper level of developmental mathematics. The data reviewed in the article show unprecedented levels of achievement in the innovative course structure for students who place in developmental mathematics.
