A Comparison of Computer-Mediated and Lecture classes in Developmental Mathematics
By D. Patrick Kinney, General College, University of Minnesota

Abstract

This study compared student outcomes in developmental mathematics courses taught using (a) computer-mediated instruction using interactive multimedia software, and (b) lecture. A quasi-experimental design yielded no significant differences on common final exams and attendance patterns. The course satisfaction ratings were significantly higher for the computer-mediated courses. Students in lecture courses were significantly more likely to withdraw. Students in computer-mediated courses indicated a preference for computer-mediated instruction because they did not want to learn mathematics through the lecture method and they wanted greater control over their learning.
