Midterm Grade Reports: Are They Effective?
By Vivian Morgan Alley, Middle Tennessee State University
Abstract
Midterm grade reports were researched by a review of literature including
practices at other universities and by a statistical study. Twenty
sections of Developmental Studies Mathematics at Middle Tennessee
State University classes were used for this study. The first hypothesis
was that the improvement made in students’ averages from midterm
to the final was greater in the experimental group of classes receiving
midterm grade reports than in the control group that did not. The
second hypothesis was that the pretest/posttest improvement was greater
in the experimental group than in the control group. The means of
the different groups were compared by 2-sample t-tests to determine
if there was a significant difference in the two sets of improvement.
